Fuel Pump Manufacturers Working Group

Save yourself time and money! The FPMWG has discovered that many fuel pumps are needlessly replaced. Proper diagnosis of the entire fuel system is key to making a successful repair the first time and preventing customer comebacks. There are many resources on this site to help you do just that. Taking the time to read and follow these procedures may be just what you need to guide you through the process.

Resources

Safety Procedures

Only trained personnel who have a thorough knowledge of automotive fuel systems, the proper tools and an appropriate work space should perform repairs to a vehicle’s fuel system.

Disposal Procedures

Proper disposal of the fuel tank's liquid contents is an integral part of fuel system service. The liquid (fuel and water) mixture should be handled as hazardous waste material according to local, state and federal regulations.

Diagnostic & Testing Procedures

All fuel delivery test procedures are basically the same. They measure both the pressure and volume of fuel being delivered through the system under standardized testing conditions. In addition to testing for pressure and volume, measuring the amperage of the fuel pump circuit can help determine the cause of a malfunction.

Cleaning Procedures

Fuel contaminants like dirt, rust and/or debris are a primary cause of in-tank fuel pump failure, and may cause the replacement pump to fail prematurely. For a successful installation, you must make sure to keep everything clean – from beginning to end.
